MoneyGram Haas

After a rollercoaster year, Haas is aiming for more consistent, good results in this upcoming season.

Haas joined the grid in 2016, making them the newest team. They are also the smallest. In its short history Haas has had a single standout year, 2018 when they finished 5th in the Constructors' Championship. They've mostly been in the back-field (8th-10th), the worse being 2020-2021 where the team only scored 3 points.

A large part of their struggle centers around their finances and having a large enough budget to advance their cars. In 2019 their sponsorship with Rich Energy ended mid-season. After a year (2021) with Uralkali's sponsorship, Haas terminated the relationship right before the start of the 2022 season due to Uralkali's Russian ties and the invasion of Ukraine. It also resulted in the sacking of Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, opening the door for K-Mag's return to the team.

Kevin Magnussen did his first stint with the team from 2017-2020. During this time he finished 9th in the driver's championship (2018), two fastest laps, and contributed to Haas reaching its highest constructor's finish of fifth in 2018. Magnussen left the team after 2020 and spent the next year racing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, 24hrs of Le Mans and a single IndyCar race. He returned to the team in 2022 as a last minute replacement, receiving the call to join the team less than two weeks before testing. He ended the season with a highest finish of 5th in Bahrain, 13th in the WDC and his maiden pole position in Brazil.

Joining the team this year is Nico Hulkenburg. He made his Formula 1 season debut in 2010 with Williams and has driven with a number of teams since: Sahara Force India (reserve 2011; full time 2012, 2014-2016), Renault (full time 2017-2018), and BWT Racing Point/Aston Martin (reserve 2020-2022). He holds the record for most race starts without a podium, something both he and Haas would be happy to be rid of. In 2015 he also raced in the FIA WEC, and the 24 hrs of Le Mans which he won.

2022 felt like a reset for the team, with enough highlights to reinvigorate the team after a few disapointing years. Their new driver lineup aims to build on this by bringing in more experience to help refine the car's design. A new title sponsor in MoneyGram will also allow for further advances with increased funding. They are set up for what could be a very good season.
